These features of deep groove ball bearings limit the use of positioning/non-locating bearing arrangements in gearboxes.
High load bearing, low friction angular roller bearing
In order to adopt a positioning/non-locating bearing arrangement without changing the design space, Schaeffler has developed an innovative angular roller bearing. The structural design of the bearing is similar to that of a tapered roller bearing, except that it adds a rib to the outer ring so that it can carry axial forces in both directions. An angular roller bearing can be used as a locating bearing because of the presence of two ribs. In terms of load bearing, it is different from the point contact of the ball bearing. The angular roller bearing is the line contact, so the bearing capacity of the bearing is higher while maintaining low friction. The simulation results show that in the same design space, the bearing capacity of this angular roller bearing can be increased by 40% compared with deep groove ball bearings.
Thanks to this innovative design, the angular roller bearing combines the high load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings with the low friction of ball bearings. It can be used as a replacement for ball bearings for positioning/non-positioning gearbox bearing arrangements.
