In other words, the illustrated sprag clutch bearing allows its outer ring to rotate in a counterclockwise direction relative to the inner ring at any time, or to allow its inner ring to rotate in a clockwise direction relative to the outer periphery.
However, if the outer ring attempts to rotate in a clockwise direction relative to the inner ring, the sprag clutch bearing will be incapable of moving between the inner and outer rings due to the geometry, thereby locking the two together. That is to say, once the wedge is caught in the inner and outer rings, the one-way clutch is locked, so that the outer ring cannot rotate clockwise with respect to the inner ring, or the inner ring rotates counterclockwise with respect to the outer ring. In order to ensure that the sprag clutch bearing can be reliably wedged between the inner and outer rings, a one-way clutch is provided with a retaining spring to keep the wedge in a direction that can lock two turns, and always maintain a slight inclination.
The failure mode and manufacturing materials of the sprag clutch bearing are the same as those of the roller one-way clutch.
Advantage of sprag clutch bearing
The DC version is a sprag clutch bearing but does not include an inner ring and an outer ring. This model must be matched with the inner and outer rings designed by the customer. The sprag clutch bearing support axial and radial loads, as well as grease and oil seals.
The spatial tolerance of the irregular actuator contact surface must be within the range. The width of the contact surface between the outer ring and the inner ring must not be smaller than the dimension "e". The contact surface must not have any grooves to ensure normal function.
